  • The Pittsburg State women used a 25-point night from sophomore forward Lizzy Jeronimus and double-digit efforts by shooters Drew Roberts and Morgan Westhoff to defeat the Lincoln Blue Tigers, 68-59, Thursday night at Jason Gym.
This stem-to-stern win gave Pitt State No. 10 this season and the Gorillas became the first MIAA basketball program to have its men’s and women’s teams reach 10 wins this season.
Pitt State improves to 10-3 overall, 4-1 in the congested Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, setting up a huge road game Saturday with Central Missouri, a team 3-1 in conference play and on a conference-best six-game winning streak.
Senior center Lauren Brown somewhat came back down to Earth on Thursday with 11 rebounds, half of her total from her school-record 22-rebound performance this past Saturday against Northwest Missouri. Brown had seven points on 2-2 shooting from the field and 3-4 from the free throw stripe. No. 24 ended up with two blocked shots and four personal fouls.
Meanwhile, her counterpart from Lincoln, forward Alicia Johnson, finished with one point and three rebounds. Nesha Wright picked up the slack from Johnson on the boards with a team-high 10 for Lincoln. The Blue Tigers outrebounded Pitt State 38-34, 20-9 on the offensive glass.
Pitt State had an 18-point lead — 64-46 — as late as 4:36 remaining.
In addition to the offensive explosion of Jeronimus (the conference’s leading scorer), Westhoff pitched in with 11 points and Roberts added 10. Kylie Gafford came back from an one-game absence with six points and six rebounds. Y’Cedria Devers added five points and five rebounds.
Arriana Walker, the Lincoln player who torched Pitt State last year in the MIAA Tournament, finished with 10 points on 3-13 shooting from the field. She had three rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Jackeya Mitchell led four Blue Tiger players in double figures with 13 points, followed by Dahlia Booker (12), Quiessence Price (10) and Walker.
In other MIAA games Thursday night, Truman State routed Central Oklahoma 72-39 in Kirksville, Washburn handed Fort Hays State its third consecutive loss with a 63-60 verdict in Hays and Missouri Southern defeated Lindenwood 78-74 on the road in St. Charles. Only the Bulldogs of Truman State truly enjoyed a home-court advantage on Thursday.
