  • It was a meeting of two of the best teams in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association on Saturday afternoon.
Central Missouri came in with a 11-1 overall record, 3-1 MIAA and on a six-game winning streak and Pitt State came in 10-3, 4-1 MIAA and on a four-game winning streak.
Central Missouri made eight more two-point field goals and five more free throws, overcoming six more 3-point shots by Pitt State, during a 70-67 win at the UCM Multipurpose Building.
Pitt State trailed 32-30 at halftime and the Jennies built their lead to 47-35 by the 12:04 mark. The Gorillas made their runs on the lead but the Jennies always found enough of an answer.
The Central Missouri answer was forward Nicole Caddell, who posted a double-double of game-highs 19 points and 13 rebounds. Her work on the offensive glass — eight boards — especially proved fatal to the Gorillas. She made just enough free throws Saturday — three in eight attempts.
Quinnecia Twine and Keuna Flax joined Caddell in double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Flax added three assists and two steals.
Other than a perfect 5-5 performance (including 1-1 on 3s) by freshman Kylie Gafford and a 2-3 effort by senior Lauren Brown, Pitt State often struggled to find its shooting touch — 4-11 from Lizzy Jeronimus and Morgan Westhoff, 4-10 from Drew Roberts, 2-8 from Alexa Bordewick, 1-4 from Hailey Roderique and 2-5 from Y’Cedria Devers, all below 50 percent shooting.
Jeronimus had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists, her point total helped out by eight made free throws in nine attempts.
Gafford and Westhoff both reached double figures with 11 points apiece and Roberts added 10. Brown finished with five points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Gafford had three rejections. Bordewick added three assists.
In other MIAA games Saturday afternoon, Lindenwood defeated Central Oklahoma 81-78, Truman State rolled over Emporia State 78-58, Missouri Western squeaked past Northwest Missouri 68-66, Missouri Southern defeated Lincoln 67-55 and Washburn remained unbeaten in conference play with a 74-45 rout of Nebraska-Kearney.
Pitt State (10-4, 4-2) plays a streaking Missouri Southern team on Wednesday in Joplin. The Lions are now 10-3, 4-1 MIAA and on a four-game winning streak.
Washburn (10-2, 4-0), Truman State (12-2, 5-1) and Central Missouri (12-1, 4-1) also have impressive winning streaks — Central Missouri seven, Truman State five and Washburn four.
