Now, Commerce head coach Brian Sutton can say ‘finally.’
On Tuesday, Commerce picked up their first win in Don Gutteridge League play with a 9-8 victory over KTCCU at Mike Falletti Field in Frontenac.
“We finally hit the ball,” Sutton said. “It takes runs to win a game.”
In addition to runs, they also rested on the arm of Christian Smith, who started three innings and gave up just one hit.
But, that is not to say that Commerce didn’t make it interesting down the stretch.
Holding a 9-3 lead going into the sixth, and final, inning, KTCCU plated five runs before Smith came in for one last batter to notch a third-out strikeout and preserve the win for Commerce.
KTCCU did pick up a three-run double by Gage Tindell in the middle of the sixth and a two-run single from Ryan Russian for their five runs in the inning.
But, it proved to be too little and, almost, too late.
Commerce struck first in the top of the first inning when Cody Lindbloom picked up the first two of his four RBI with a two-run double to right field.
Commerce tacked on four more runs in the fourth after Zach Smith belted out an inside-the-park home run that drifted all the way to the right-field fence.
In the bottom half of the inning, KTCCU came up with their first two runs on RBI singles by Chris Huyett and Casey Buckner.
KTCCU had an opportunity to put more on the board in the fifth, but managed just one run after a two-out groundout to third that allowed Commerce to come out of the inning with a 7-3 lead.
“They just had the timely hits and that has been our story all season long,” said KTCCU head coach Jerry Standlee. “The front of our lineup came up and we couldn’t get it done.
But, KTCCU was able to make up for it in the sixth after Tindell blasted his three-run double up the middle.
KTCCU’s Markel White was able to come in fourth and hold Commerce to just three hits over the last three innings of the game to give KTCCU a shot.
“Markel did have a good night pitching tonight,” Standlee said.
For Commerce, the bats started to finally generate hits, which led to runs. That is something that Sutton said has not happened this season until now.
“It was a case of finally hitting the ball,” Sutton said. “When the bats get going everyone seems to catch up.
“The guys finally feel like the monkey is off their back.”
