Last year, it was the night the lights went out in Baxter Springs before the start of the 11-12 year-old Kansas Little League State Championship Game.
On Saturday night, lightning in the area forced play to be suspended at approximately 8:19 p.m. with Girard and Baxter Springs scoreless in the top of the second after Girard starting pitcher Ethan Jahay and Baxter Springs counterpart Blake Thiessen began taking control of the contest.
At 8:32, the Baxter groundcrew and both teams’ coaches rolled the tarp over the infield and at 8:36, intermittent rain began coming down. Around 8:45, an announcement was made that a decision would be made at 9:30 about the game. At 9:13, it was announced the game would be suspended until a 2 p.m. start today.
