  • Girard head coach Brad Herlocker lit into his girls at halftime, as the Trojans led the Southeast Lancers 30-26 after leading by as many as 11 points in the first quarter.
“I talked in a pretty loud voice and I felt like they responded very well to that,” Coach Herlocker said. “I try not to do that very often, so when I do it it’s a special occasion. It kind of lit a fire under them and we did a much better job of executing than we did in the first half.”
Girard scored the first 10 points after halftime — including six in the first 45 seconds after forcing three Southeast turnovers — en route to a 58-43 win Tuesday evening at Ted R. Taylor Gymnasium.
Hannah Jones netted six of her eight points during this 10-0 run, hitting three open shots made available by the Southeast defense keying on junior guard Hadyn Herlocker. Jones hit shots that she passed on in the first half.
Jones was not alone in the making key shots department — senior forward Danica Kelly scored a game-high 18 points, Hope McLeod and Jordan Davied each had nine and Hadyn Herlocker finished with eight.
“I feel like there were a lot of players on our team who were willing to step up and take their shots with confidence,” Coach Herlocker said. “My goodness, there were some open shots. Hadyn’s had a very special season and when you have a season like that, you start getting attention and that creates a great amount of opportunity for everyone else. From Danica Kelly to Jordan Davied to Hope McLeod and Hannah Jones, we had people stepping up.”
Southeast trimmed into Girard’s advantage late in the first half with the help of sophomore guard Brytany Stewart and freshman guard Laura Yancey. Stewart hit a basket and one free throw and Yancey stepped into a mid-range shot that made it a 28-25 Girard lead.
However, the Lancers committed 22 turnovers after three quarters and shot 33 percent at the foul line, 9-for-27. Girard led 50-34 after three.
Amy Martin led Southeast with 13 points. Christine Bone and Olivia Powell each had eight — Bone shot 6-10 at the foul line.
Girard (14-4, 5-0 CNC) hosts a Frontenac squad Friday in a heavyweight match of local girls basketball teams. The Raiders won 40-27 over Erie on Tuesday and improved their mark in the CNC to 5-0 and 17-1 overall.

Leading the Lancers 25-18 at halftime, Girard head coach Rod Wescott gave his team some encouraging words at intermission.
“I was pretty disappointed in the way that we played the first half,” Wescott said. “We got some good looks and didn’t finish. A lot of that was due to our focus and concentration. It was something that we addressed at halftime and the kids were able to come out the second half and put some things together. We were able to finish at the rim and knocked down some good looks. I felt like we played tough defensively in the third quarter.”
Page 2 of 2 - Devin Alters hit a 3 on the first Girard possession and Kyle Eckelberry bookended a 16-2 Girard run with a banked 3, Girard ahead 41-20 after this burst. Alters made another basket and Dillon Walsh made three baskets on a series of back cuts and openings around the rim. Cody Grilz scored a layup in transition on a sharp feed by Eckelberry.
Walsh scored a game-high 18 points and Grilz finished with 13 after scoring 11 first-half points and fouling out with 6:26 left in the game. Alters and Trenton Stolte each finished with nine.
Aaron Lake led Southeast with 16 points and Travis Trayer added 10. Cade Ulery and Josh Thompson both were hampered by foul trouble — Thompson fouled out 5 seconds after Grilz and Ulery fouled out later in the fourth.
