Former Kansas Senate President Robert Talkington, who also served as state Board of Regents chairman, has died at 81.

Former Kansas Senate President Robert Talkington, who also served as state Board of Regents chairman, has died at 81.


A funeral home in Talkington's hometown of Iola says he died early Sunday at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., from complications of a stroke.


The Republican lawmaker and attorney won the first of two terms in the Kansas House in 1968. Four years later, he captured a Senate seat and was the chamber's president from 1985 to 1989.


Talkington served on the Board of Regents from 1995 to 1999, including two years as chairman. He also served on the Kansas Turnpike Authority.


His wife, Donna, died in 2009. Survivors include five children.


The funeral is scheduled at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Iola.
