When Dr. Steve Scott became the new Pittsburg State president, it opened up another position on campus: his old one.
Now, several months after Scott has taken office, Pittsburg State is getting started on a search for a new provost/vice president for academic affairs. In fact, the university has the position listed on the Web site.
Dr. Lynette Olson has been serving as the interim provost since July.
The position is a member of the PSU president’s cabinet and reports directly to the president. Several people report to the provost, including the deans of the four colleges; the deans of Continuing and Graduate Studies, Enrollment Management and Student Success, and Learning Resources; and the directors of Analysis, Planning and Assessment, and the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology.
“This is a very important hire for the university,” said Ron Womble, PSU director of public relations. “That’s why we’re putting it on the front of our Web site. Other than the president, this is the chief academic officer under him.”
The job description includes plenty of requirements for the position. Requirements for provost include an earned doctorate, a record of success as a higher education administrator, experience in a collective bargaining environment, and a work history including the rank of professor and an academic leadership position at a university that offers at least a bachelor’s degree, among other requirements.
The search will be conducted by Pittsburg State in a search committee. Semifinalists will have to undergo a criminal and financial credit check.
Womble said the current plan is to have a final application deadline of Dec. 21, with semifinalists to be selected from Jan. 11-15, phone interviews and reference checks from Jan. 19 to Feb. 5, and campus interviews Feb. 8 to March 5. The final selection will be made later in spring 2010.
To apply for the position, applicants should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and a vision statement regarding his or her expectations of the possibilities and responsibilities as a provost, along with six professional references to pvpaasearch@pittstate.edu. Electronic submission of all application materials is required. The search will be confidential.
