  • Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Stella Hastings, will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium.
“I’m just thrilled about this concert,” said Stella Hastings, symphony artistic director and conductor. “I’m thrilled about this wonderful music, and thrilled to work with my friend and colleague Selim Giray.”
The concert will open with “Scherzo Capriccioso for Orchestra, Op. 66” by Dvorak, written in 1883.
Giray will be featured in “Violin Concerto in A Minor, Op. 53,” written in 1879 and revised by Dvorak after the composer received some advice from Joseph Joachim, who was one of Europe’s most respected violin soloists. However, there were basic stylistic differences between the two, and another violinist,  Frantisek Ondricek, premiered the piece in 1883.
Giray, PSU associate professor of violin, viola and chamber music, has performed extensively on four continents and appeared frequently on national public radio and television.
In addition to his PSU duties, he serves as principal second violin of the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and is assistant conductor of the Ohio Light Opera.
The program will conclude with “Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88,” which was written in less than a month in 1889.
Concert tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens, with children under 12 admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Full-time PSU students will be admitted free with their photo ID.
