The Mavericks were looking to drive at the end of the first quarter and James Franklin III, the MIAA's second-leading rusher, found paydirt on a 1-yard run to give UNO a 13-7 lead early in the second.

But, the Gorillas were able to keep pace on their next possession. The running tandem of Isaac and Wilson accounted for 13 combined rushing yards, but receiver Jon Thomas had a great lateral reception he grabbed one-handed off the ground and a another catch for 22 yards to get the Gorillas in position for an answer. After getting inside the UNO 10, Wilson picked up his first touchdown on a 9-yard run, tying the game at 13.

Things would not last long as just 20 seconds later, UNO returner Camren Tornenden returned a Jake Craig delivery 92 yards for an untouched score, putting the Mavericks up 20-13 with 8:05 left in the half.

The Mavericks were able to take advantage on a turnover on downs at their own 31 and drove the ball — on the back of Terrell — down to the PSU 13 with under a minute left in the half.

Just two plays later, receiver Mike Higgins caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Tiegland to give the Mavericks a 27-13 lead with 27.5 seconds left in the first half.

In the first half, the Mavericks managed 230 yards of total offense behind receiver Brian Miller's five catches for 120 yards. The Gorillas had 202 yards of offense, led by Wilson's 64 yards and one touchdown on eight carries.
