Pittsburg High seniors Chapril Stewart and Sammie Highfield were recognized at last week’s tennis team lettermen’s banquet both for their recently concluded 2010 seasons and for the contributions they had made during the past four years.

“Together, they won more than 100 matches,” coach John Seal said Friday. “They were captains and became good because they worked at it and paid the price.”

Having awarded letters to 15 players, Seal said tennis “is a tough letter” and that the underclassmen who will lead next year benefitted from watching Stewart practice and compete as a singles player and Highfield as a doubles partner with KaCey Sinclair.

Chapril won first place at the Pittsburg and Chanute tournaments this year and second in Labette County and Coffeyville. Sammie and KaCey took first in Pittsburg and Chanute and second at Coffeyville.

Chapril had a 24-9 record and Sammie and KaCey were 18-14. “They’ve been the building blocks of our program,” Seal said.

“They were very productive, and we have talent for next season. Our varsity kids know they’ve got to live on the court, and they are. Chapril and Sammie set a good example of that.”

The lettermen’s banquet was held Oct. 26 in the PHS Commons.
