  • Samuel “Sam” Andrew Hughes, 63, of rural Cherokee, died at 7:12 p.m., Sunday, June 9, 2013 at his residence.

  • Samuel “Sam” Andrew Hughes, 63, of rural Cherokee, died at 7:12 p.m., Sunday, June 9, 2013 at his residence.
    He was born March 5, 1950 in Swink, Oklahoma, a son of Charles and Alta (Hyde) Hughes.
    Sam grew up in Chouteau, Oklahoma and graduated from Chouteau High School. He attended Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Missouri.
    He married Virginia L. Wilkerson on July 16, 1971 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.
    Sam worked as a welder at McNally Manufacturing in Pittsburg for 12 years and as a housekeeper at the Girard Medical Center for 21 years until he became disabled.
    He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cherokee.
    Sam enjoyed his family, going fishing, and working with his Horned Herford cattle.
    Survivors, in addition to his wife, Virginia, of the home; a daughter, Sarah Watters and Todd of Frontenac; sons Joshua Hughes and Jenny Kennedy of Hepler; Timothy Hughes of Cherokee. He also leaves his loving grandchildren, Hannah Hughes, Elizabeth Murphy, Robert Murphy, Jenna Hughes, Megan Murphy and Elden Hughes; brothers Leon Hughes and wife Pat of Claremore, Oklahoma and Jim Hughes and wife Treva of Cheyenne, Oklahoma, Terry Hughes and wife Rose of Chouteau; a sister, Ethma Hughes Suggs of Chouteau; many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by a daughter, Erin Ruth Hughes; his parents; sisters Martha Hughes and Mary Laura Hughes Poe.
    He was greatly loved and will be very much missed.
    Celebration of Life services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Rev. Ben Scott officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 1:00 p.m., Wednesday.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Southeast Kansas Respite Services in Parsons, Kansas or Harry Hynes Hospice and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
