  • Earlier this month, Via Christi Hospital laid off 28 individuals. Meanwhile, local officials know there are more than just 28 people looking for jobs in the county.
In fact, the most recent unemployment numbers show Crawford County, at 5.4 percent unemployment rate, is still above the state average of 5.3 percent.
The Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Pittsburg are teaming up to host a Crawford County Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, at Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium.
“It was important to the city, the Chamber and the administration at Via Christi to be as proactive as possible and to help those affected,” said Blake Benson, Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce president. “We figured the best thing to do was to bring those affected by the announcement together with those with jobs available. We decided not just to limit it to employers with medical jobs available. Really, anyone with jobs available is welcome at this event. Although [the Via Christi layoffs] is the event that prompted this, we felt it was a good opportunity for any employer who is looking for people to come face to face with people looking for a job.”
For job seekers, the event is free, although business attire is suggested. As with any job fair, it’s always a good idea to bring resumes.
For those seeking to hire, employers with open positions are welcome to participate by calling Anna Gudde at 231-1000 by Wednesday, June 12.
