Arcadia friends sent condolences to the family of Velma Eggen Jewell, 92, whose funeral services are to be Dec. 29 in Lockwood, Mo., with burial beside her husband, Eugene Jewell, in the Jewell family plot in Old Arcadia Cemetery. A school teacher for many years, Mrs. Jewell was a 1937 graduate of Arcadia High School and a 1968 graduate of Pittsburg State University.

Steve and Sandy Hughes, Texas, spent two pre-Christmas days with his mother, Portie Hughes, McPherson. On Christmas Day, she was with her daughter and family, Kirby and John Gould, Olathe. Both of their daughters, Ginny and Katie, were home from college.

On Christmas Day, many of the local Shead family members attended the R.H. Geurin and Shead Christmas dinner hosted by Ralph and Cindy Shead in the Carl Junction, Mo., Christian Church social room near their home. A total of 41 were present, including non-relative guests including their pastor and family and co-workers. On Dec. 27, Mark, Haley, Katy and Benjamin Shead of Fort Scott, Maria and Clayton Whitson of Tulsa, Okla., Ralph and Cindy Shead, Carl Junction, Matthew and Ashley Shead, Joplin, and his sisters, Erin and Sarah Shead, California, and Mary V. Shead, Arcadia, had a post-Christmas dinner and gift exchange following  a trip to the woods for target practice and feeding miniature animals.

Kelly Reeves had Christmas dinner with Pastor Charles and Willa Cable in the Arcadia Christian Church parsonage. Guest speaker Jan. 9 at the church will be Bob Cable, son of the pastor and  his wife.

Word was received of the death of Beth Lindley, formerly of Sheldon, Mo. Among her relatives are cousins Betty Thayer Baima, now of Pittsburg, and her sisters, the late Cleo Thayer Scott and June Thayer Fowler.

Mae Watt reported that on the Thursday afternoon before Christmas, she watched a hot air balloon with her name tied to it take off in a southerly direction. She said that it was a pleasant memory for a happy season.

Bonnie, Joyce and Lauren Hines, Jean Greek and Joyce Stephens took dinner to Thelma Medley’s home at the time of the death of her nephew, Lee Stroud. Brandon and Betty Allen helped with the clean-up following dinner.

Dorothy Mae Schulze, 66, Nevada, Mo., died Dec. 17, 2010 in St. Luke’s Hospital. Her parents are Fred and Annabelle Prettyman, rural Arcadia. Her brothers are Fred Prettyman, Nevada, and Bob Prettyman, rural Arcadia. She was an Arcadia High School graduate.

The young people in the Arcadia Christian Church had planned to send a Christmas box to Sam Truesdall, young man from Mulberry who is serving in the U.S. Army. He was able to come home for Christmas, so the box of goodies was presented to him Sunday morning at church. He will be returning to his military duties this week.

Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens will meet Jan. 10 in the Arcadia Community Center. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and the carry-in dinner will be served at the noon hour. Bingo will be played following the business session.

Arcadia High School Our Gang will have its first meeting of 2011 on Jan. 22. Everyone should bring a quart of chili for a chili dump.
