The St. Mary’s Colgan softball team won the first girls team title in school history, by winning the Class 2-1A state championship in Emporia.

The St. Mary’s Colgan softball team won the first girls team title in school history, by winning the Class 2-1A state championship in Emporia.

Colgan defeated top-seeded Spearville 14-2 in the championship game, led by the pitching arm of Morgan Gilmore and the 4-for-5 hitting performance of catcher Ashley Werner, and took out Chetopa 10-4 in the semifinal game.

Eight Colgan players earned All-State first team and second team honors: pitcher Gilmore, catcher Werner, outfielder Maggie Sloan and infielders Annie Dellasega and Allison McCormick (first team); pitcher Katie Hayes and infielders Katie Sloan and Molly Marquardt (second team).

The Colgan boys golf team won its second straight state championship and the Colgan baseball team won its record-setting seventh straight state championship, making it a season to remember for Colgan.
