  • Ten Girard FFA members went to Indianapolis for the 85th National FFA Convention held Oct. 24-27.
Members who attended include Kenzie Curran, Kord Curran, Haley DeGarmo, Austin Egbert, Katie Jahay, Briston Kapler, Faith McClaskey, Bethany Schifferdecker, James Spieth and Anissa Zagonel.
Advisor Joe Curran sponsored the group, who left Girard at 7 a.m. on Oct. 24 to join students from four other schools and board a charter bus in Moran.
“The bus ride was really fun because we got to make new friends from other schools and got to know the advisors sponsoring the trip,” Katie Jahay said.
While in Indianapolis, the students attended convention sessions at Lucas Oil Stadium and Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
They also attended a concert featuring The Band Perry and Brantley Gilbert at Lucas Oil Stadium and toured the Equipment Technologies factory where Apache sprayers are custom built by employees.
“It was really cool how everything they built was assembled by hand. You could tell they took pride in the quality of their product,” James Spieth said.
Along with the concert and tour, the group visited the National FFA Center and National FFA Convention Expo and Career Show.
“Walking through the career show was my favorite part of the trip because I got to see the variety of careers agriculture has to offer,” Bethany Schifferdecker said.
During the convention the Girard FFA Chapter was recognized for being a three-star chapter under the National Chapter Award.
Regarding the trip, advisor Joe Curran said, “Even though this was my 23rd convention, I am still impressed by the enthusiasm and professionalism not only of our students, but also the entire organization.”
