Police had first received a report that a man had fallen into a strip pit at Wilderness Park on Saturday morning at 11:21 a.m. Later, Pittsburg police released that Mateo V. Lorenzo, 22, Pittsburg, had been missing since Saturday.

Crews as far away as Newton County had searched the strip pits in the park Sunday, but did not find anything. Monday, Pittsburg police and fire crews, along with Frontenac fire crews, located Lorenzo's body at roughly 2:30 p.m. in roughly 14 feet of water.

Lt. Cris Hatcher, Pittsburg police, said that the original caller had seen a man falling off the bank of a strip pit into the bank of a strip pit at the park, and the man was identified as Lorenzo.

An autopsy is scheduled at this time. Hatcher said he could not comment about whether Lorenzo was impaired until the autopsy report comes back.

"It was a great collective effort by Pittsburg police, Pittsburg fire, Frontenac fire and Newton County to locate the body," Hatcher said.
