SALINA — Two Pittsburg High School wrestlers advanced to the championship finals on the first day of the Class 4A state tournament Friday at the Salina Bicentennial Center and Pittsburg rests in third place overall as a team with 65 points through semifinal action.

Defending Class 5A state champion Aaron Seybold (145 pounds) will face Jonathan Blackwell of Bonner Springs in an epic matchup — Seybold enters 37-2 and Blackwell 44-2.

Seybold pinned his first opponent in 45 seconds, pinned his quarterfinal opponent in an incredible 12 seconds and won a 6-0 decision in the semis.

Heavyweight Broc Bennett could join his older brother Beau as state wrestling champion — today, Bennett (33-6) faces Zach Lanning of McPherson (30-2) in the 404th match of the tournament.

Bennett pinned his first opponent in 1:34, won a 7-2 decision over his quarterfinal opponent and won an epic 3-2 four overtime semifinal match with Caleb King of KC Piper.

Levi Kester (106) reached the semis but was pinned by Reese Cokeley of St. James Academy in 3:02. He won a 5-2 decision in the first round and 10-2 major decision in the quarterfinals. Kester will be guaranteed a medal — anywhere from third to sixth place as he will be waiting at the top of the consolation bracket.

Jeremiah Jones (113) won his first round match and lost in the quarters. Jones faces Simon Munoz of Topeka Hayden in the consolation bracket.

Parker Fields (120) lost both his matches — first round to Jaysten McClure of Maize South and consolation bracket to Corey Spader of Spring Hill.

Brett Cobb (126) lost his opening match to Jake Wilson of Rose Hill and won his first match consolation match against Caleb Himpel of Tonganoxie, staying alive for the second day of wrestling. Cobb wrestles Clay Kear of Andale in his next match.

Jacob Wools (132) lost to eventual finalist Kyle Wilson of Wamego in a tough first match and won his consolation match against Andrew Tujague of St. James Academy. Wools next faces Brenden Lewis of Larned.

Brendan Maxwell (170) lost his first match to finalist Levi Eck of Andale and his consolation match to Jaysson Tansey of KC Sumner.

Brent Koehn (182) won his first match over Andy Muehlberger of St. James Academy and lost in the quarterfinals to Kasey Crump of Pratt. Koehn wrestles Dalton Clark of McPherson in his next match.

Gershom Avalos (220) won his first match against Shane Schramm of DeSoto and lost a tough decision to Edward Fitzgerald of Santa Fe Trail in the quarters. Avalos next wrestles Jordan Drybread of Chanute.
