State assessment tests begin today and elementary schools around Crawford County held rallies Monday afternoon to pep up their students for the tests.

Pittsburg State University football players visited with students at a rally at George Nettels Elementary. At the rally at Meadowlark Elementary, teachers gave motivational speeches, recited a motivational poem and sang songs.

Frank Layden Elementary in Frontenac included the entire student body in its rally. In the middle gym, kindergarten through second grade students formed a tunnel and high-fived the third through fifth graders — who are taking the tests — as they entered the gym. All of the students and many of the teachers wore black bandanas emblazoned with the phrase “Do Your Best,” which the students can wear while they take their tests.

After the pep band and Frontenac Junior High School cheerleaders worked the students into a frenzy, principal Mark Allai rode in on the back of a motorcycle to address the students. Frontenac is a special place because each of them works hard every day, he said.

“It’s important to get revved up to do your best on the tests,” Allai said. “You’ve been working hard and listening to your teachers, and I know Frontenac is going to do well. It’s up to you to do your best and take your time and show us why Frontenac is the best place to be.”

After Allai addressed the students, teachers and students from different grades competed in several games. One involved full and empty soda cans. In another game, teachers had to toss three balloon into the air and keep them from touching the floor for at least 60 seconds. A third game involved stacking plastic cups. The rallies help put the students at ease, said teacher Tim Vesco, who organized the rally.

“Instead of being stressed-out, they’ll have a good time,” he said.

Vesco also made a music video in which he rewrote the lyrics to LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It” to “Ready And You Know It.”

After the students sang along to the video, the third through fifth graders did the Cha Cha Slide dance on the gym floor and were treated to cupcakes to celebrate Allai’s birthday.
