  • Girard junior starting pitcher Nick George began his 2012 season earning a win against Pittsburg at JayCee Ballpark, throwing 5.2 innings of no-hit ball and he’s been a consistently tough pitcher to hit all season.
Against the Chanute Blue Comets on Tuesday night, George showed his good stuff throughout his six innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out 10 — two in the first (first two batters of the game), three in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
After he allowed one run in the second on a single and some wild pitching, he concentrated and struck out three consecutive batters.
The Girard offense produced all matter of necessary run support for George in the second inning — plating six runs on five hits — en route to a 9-3 win in the first half of a nonleague doubleheader.
“I thought the kids did a really good job in the early part of the game tonight with their approach at the plate,” Girard head coach Keith Matlock said. “All those runs were off basehits and it’s because we came up and we got ourselves in good counts and good situations to look for pitches.
“And Nick was just Nick. He’s been fantastic all year, throws strikes and allows his defense to play behind him. He does a good job.”
Girard scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth in a second game 8-6 win to produce a sweep of the Blue Comets.
“It was nice because there’s a couple games this year where we haven’t had it (timely hitting),” Matlock said. “It was good to see us finally get that. We put ourselves in that situation to need it but give Chanute some credit. They battled that one inning, came back and tied it up. I was just proud to see my kids continue to battle and scratch out a win.”
In that six-run second inning, senior outfielder Justin Mein led off, reaching first when he was hit by a pitch.
Then, Girard delivered hits five straight times — Brayden Johnson singled, Kevin Rowe smacked a two-run double, Taylor Lewis singled, Nate George drove in two on a single and Anthony Scholes hit a RBI single.
Left-handed first baseman Cody Grilz led off the fourth with a solo home run over the right field wall. At that point, Girard led 8-2.
In the second game, Girard led 6-2 before Chanute tied it up in the fifth — senior first baseman Quinton Schooley hit a two-run single and senior Grant McMillan scored the tying run on a perfectly-executed squeeze bunt on fellow senior Sam Son’s end at the plate.
Girard broke a 6-6 score in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on three hits. Nate George and Dillon Walsh both reached on infield singles and Nick George walked, loading the bases for Mein. Mein delivered with a two-run single, picking up a game-winning RBI to cap off a solid overall night.
Page 2 of 2 - “He played well all night,” Matlock said of Mein. “He came in in that first game and closed it out on the mound. He pitched well. He did a great job both games at the plate and I am very proud of the way that Justin played.”
Girard head coach Keith Matlock graduated from Chanute in the 1990s.
“Last year was the first year and it was back in Chanute,” Matlock said. “Yeah, it was a little awkward but Matt (Chanute head coach Matt Koester) and I grew up playing together since we were little bitty so we know what each other wants to do so it makes the game a little bit difficult. It’s fun once the game starts. It’s just two teams going at it.”
