  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Thanks, SEK Symphony Orchestra

  • Dear Editor,

Our area has a tremendous number of cultural outlets unusual for a city the size of Pittsburg. The rise of the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Stella Hastings is an example of a sterling asset for this region as exemplified by the Antonin Dvorak concert last Sunday at Memorial Auditorium.

I travel extensively and have heard orchestras in a number of venues and have enjoyed the efforts of the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra over several years. However, the quality that this organization has achieved the past few years under the leadership and skills of Hastings is truly stunning and ranks it among the best of its class.
It is difficult to merge the talents of sixty University and community musicians into a cohesive unit; just the management of that feat requires kudos for a conductor. The innovation, artistic coordination, and presentations of the orchestra are all obviously the work of many people, but the leadership exemplified in the work of Stella Hastings should be fully recognized.
Ms. Hastings and the entire Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra should be congratulated for providing southeast Kansas and Pittsburg a top rate cultural attraction.
