  • It’s all over now.
No. 5-ranked Missouri Western eliminated the Pittsburg State Gorillas from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament with a 11-4 win on Friday.
Pitt State ends its season 29-24, making some noise during the first year of head coach Matt Murray, especially with its 2-1 series victory over Central Missouri to advance to Kansas City.
The Griffons, a team which especially feeds on early momentum, came off a loss to Missouri Southern in the opener Friday with pride and purpose against Pitt State starting pitcher, the usually reliable senior Cody Wren.
MIAA batting leader Michael Schulze led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on a Bubba Dotson double.
It didn’t get much better from that point on as the Griffons scored the first nine runs in five innings at odd-numbered intervals — three in the first, three in the third and three in the fifth.
With one down in the third, Grant Fink doubled and Spencer Shockley walked to set up left fielder David Chew for the pivotal moment of the contest.
Chew hit a three-run home run for a 6-0 lead and drove Wren from the game.
Shawn Egge picked up a two-run single and Shockley a RBI single in the fifth.
The Gorillas finally managed their first rally in the sixth, plating two runs on four hits.
With one down, Ryan Bilovesky and Brad Foss connected on back-to-back singles and with two outs, Luke Bordewick and Jacoby Martin hit back-to-back RBI singles, Bordewick scoring Bilovesky and Martin scoring Foss.
Pitt State made it a 9-4 game with a two-run deposit in the seventh. With two outs, Thomas walked and Bilovesky and Foss delivered back-to-back singles, Foss scoring Thomas. Cody Ball singled in Bilovesky.
The Griffons plated two insurance runs in the eighth on a Schulze two-run double and the Gorillas managed no runs against reliever Kyle Kelly.
Western (39-9) earns a return match today against Southern and the Griffons will have to beat the Lions twice for the championship in the double-elimination format. Western lost to Southern 4-3 on Friday.
