Pittsburg Presbyterian Church will host a community dinner from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Christmas Day in the Leffler Life Center.

Seed for the event was planted years ago, when Rev. K.O. Noonoo was associate pastor at an Ohio church.

“I found it very meaningful for me and a practical way to serve others,” he said. “Then, when I came to Pittsburg five years ago, I received a card from R.J. Taylor, a member in our church, about a Christmas Day dinner at the College Avenue Church in Alton, Ga. I took that to mean that she was interesting in having such a dinner here.”

Rev. Noonoo and other church members have helped at the annual Thanksgiving Day dinner at St. John Lutheran Church.

“Two years ago we started in a small way by serving those who receive Meals on Wheels, since they don’t deliver meals on Christmas,” he said. “This year we asked if we could open this up to the community, and the vision was born.”

He said that other churches will also be attending and assisting with the meal, and many have donated food for the event.

“This is the community Christmas Day dinner at the Presbyterian Church,” Rev. Noonoo said. “If Jesus were here, he would be wanting to feed people and build bridges.”

He said that this ministry has a three-fold purpose.

“First, we want to give people who are alone a place to go on Christmas Day,” Rev. Noonoo said. “Our tag line is ‘Because no one has to be alone at Christmas.’ Second, We want to have a place for people who are hungry. And third, we want to provide a place for those who want to serve others on Christmas Day.”

Those who wish may dine in, get a meal to go or have a meal delivered to them.

“If you want to have a meal delivered, you need to call the church at 231-2920 before noon Friday,” Rev. Noonoo said. “If you want to eat here, just come. The meal is free, though we will accept donations from those who wish give them. Also, we’re still open for those who wish to help serve or clean up after the meal.”
