The headline of The Wichita Eagle’s editorial in Friday’s “Our View” column should have read “Harvey County Prosecutor Refuses to Prosecute Child Molester to Avoid Local Scandal”.
While the article’s intent was to criticize the Boy Scouts for keeping “secret files” it just showed that the scouts did everything right but still could not prevail in an era where keeping things quiet was preferred to outing predators.
The Wichita Eagle article states that the county prosecutor refused to press charges on a molester to spare the YMCA, BSA and local churches from the scandal. How that is the fault of the boy scouts is beyond my feeble mind.
The scouts notified local law enforcement and did everything right. The so-called secret files were files that the BSA kept of investigative outcomes into allegations and of who to never allow into scouting again even if that person moved. There was no cover up or hiding.
Shame on The Wichita Eagle for jumping on the bandwagon to bash scouting.
