  • The Girard Trojans ended their season in disappointing fashion on the road at Chanute.
The Blue Comets ran all over the Trojans, and Girard could get nothing going on offense in a 53-6 rout by Chanute.
This marks the third year in a row in which the Trojans have ended the season with a loss to Chanute, including last year’s 28-6 loss and 2010’s 42-12 loss.
Chanute was full of surprises from the get-go, attempting an onsides kick to open the game. But Girard was not fooled, and recovered the onsides. That was just about the last good thing that happened for the Trojans in the half.
The Trojans went three and out, and Chanute moved quickly and efficiently down the field, largely behind quarterback Brock Gilmore and running back Blake Kisner.
Kisner got the finishing touch on the first two drives for the Trojans, scoring from 6 and 45 yards away.
The Trojans had problems with fumbles in the first half, giving the ball with a short field to Chanute twice early.
The Blue Comets would turn one of those turnovers into a touchdown (the other would be a turnover of their own) to make it a 22-0 game before Girard earned their second first down of the game.
In fact, that second first down of the game wouldn’t occur until after Chanute had stretched the lead to 32-0, and even then, the punt came just a few plays later for the Trojans.
By halftime the score was 39-0 after a touchdown pass from Gilmore to Ethin Van Anne.
But it was Girard who struck first in the second half, with Jalen Merrell intercepting a Gilmore pass and returning it to the house to put Girard on the board with six points.
But that advantage wouldn’t last for long.
Chanute’s Jared Fiscus returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown that would crush any hopes at a comeback.
Chanute advances to play Friday at Kansas City Piper, who beat Baldwin 27-21. Girard ends its season at 9-2 and CNC League champions.
