Despite a wet field and the winds blowing in, the Riverton Rams found a way to take two from Girard on Friday in a Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League baseball doubleheader at Riverton.
The Rams won the first game 5-3 despite giving up a three-run home run to Trojan freshman Reid Murphy in the top of the seventh in game one and took the second game 5-1.
Game one starter Kaleb Clark had 12 strikeouts and scattered just three hits going into the seventh when he walked the first batter in the top of the inning.
At that point, Riverton head coach Danny Weaver decided that was enough.
“He reached his pitch count so we decided to pull him at that point,” Weaver said.
Relief pitcher James Barrett proceeded to walk the next batter and then gave up the blast to Murphy but it was not enough for the Trojans to overcome the early deficit.
Clark had thrown 63 pitches in the first three innings of the game.
In the second game, starter Wes Hefley took a no-hitter into the seventh inning when Girard’s Logan Cherry ended it with an infield single.
Girard got its lone run on an error in the fifth.
“We did some things with the wet field and the wind blowing in,” Weaver said. “We bunted and put the ball in play and did some things pretty well tonight to win some close games.”
