The St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers completed an undefeated regular season (9-0) and clinched a Class 2-1A District 1 title with a 42-6 win Thursday evening over the Olpe Eagles at Hutchinson Field.

The Colgan defense bent a little bit at times against Olpe, but did not break, and stopped the Eagles on 4 of 5 fourth down plays.
The first two Colgan scoring drives were lengthy, methodical possessions — both 9 plays, 76 yards and gobbling up 8 minutes, 35 seconds of game clock. Christian Smith broke an 18-yard touchdown run on the first drive and Sam Gilbert scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to culminate the second drive.

“In the first half, they had field position on us and they had some opportunities on us,” Colgan head coach Chuck Smith said. “They moved the ball well, they had several first downs and our defense toughened up and kept them out of the end zone. That was real big and then the punt return just before half I thought was the play of the half. I felt like going up 21-0 put us in the driver’s seat.”
Olpe’s fourth drive of the first half stalled out. Rather than boot his punt out-of-bounds and dodge any big play by either Christian Smith or Zach Smith, Olpe senior Jake Brinkman kicked straight ahead. Christian Smith fielded cleanly at his own 21, made the first tackler miss, crossed his field, dodged every remaining tackler and scored a 79-yard punt return for touchdown with 59.9 seconds remaining before halftime.

On the previous Olpe possession, senior defensive lineman Drew Gill made two critical plays. On a third and eight play, Gill tackled Olpe back Toby Smith for a 1-yard loss. On fourth down, Gill and Christian Smith broke free and pressured Baumgardner into an overthrow of his intended receiver.

“Drew Gill had a great game,” Coach Smith said. “On that reverse, I watched it and I thought it was going to break open. I know we had a defensive back over there, but I thought boy, they’re going to pick up a first down inside the 10. Drew came over and made a big tackle and offensively, he came in and blocked for us real well. We put him at tackle and we put him at tight end.”
Senior linebackers Seth Sinnett and Christian Smith intercepted Olpe quarterback Brandon Baumgardner and Baumgardner lost a fumble. Six Olpe possessions ended in turnovers — three on downs.

Christian Smith’s interception was on fourth down and resulted in a 50-yard touchdown return.

Christian Smith finished with four scores — 18-yard run, 79-yard punt return, 15-yard run and 50-yard interception return. Zach Smith added in a 43-yard touchdown run.

It was Senior Night at Hutchinson Field and Colgan features a senior class of Austin Barone, Jesse Newcomb, Matt Story, Gilbert, Christian Valdivia, Zach Smith, Sinnett, Christian Smith, William Mitchelson, Gill, Garrett Kays, Peter Howayek, Jack Villamaria, Larry Seward, Colton Beitzinger, Ryan Russian, Chris Bolinger, Dustin Seward and Derek Beck.

“A lot of kids are filling their roles,” Coach Smith said. “The Smith kids are the Smith kids and we’re not the same without them. We have 19 seniors and all of them work hard and they’re all doing a good job. I’m real proud of all of them.”
