Over 400 swimmers from Kansas and Missouri crowded into the Pittsburg YMCA swimming pool for the Pittsburg YMCA Invitational swim meet on Saturday.
The meet was part of the Tri-States Conference circuit that runs from late May through the month of July.
“We’re one of the lucky ones to have a meet this year,” said Pittsburg YMCA first-year head coach Scott McPherson.
Swimmers race against the clock for the best times over the course of the season for a berth into either the A or B championships at the end of the season.
“Their goal of for the A championships,” McPherson said. “There is a set time to qualify and swimmers try to meet those times.”
The Pittsburg YMCA has between 20 and 25 swimmers on its team this season with 15 participating in the YMCA Invitational this weekend.
For Pittsburg YMCA assistant head coach Mickie Moback, who swam for the Pittsburg YMCA team for 14 years, she started her coaching career in 2002 and has been with Pittsburg since.
“I have always just had a passion for competitive swimming,” Moback said.
While the number of participants has dwindled somewhat, Moback said that the Pittsburg YMCA squad is back on the rise.
“We went through a rough patch so, we are starting over again,” Moback said. “I think once people get involved and be a part of the team, it will help.”
The Pittsburg YMCA Invitational continues through today at the YMCA pool.
