Sometimes it is the unforced errors that will make all the difference.
The youth movement was evident Tuesday night when the Frontenac volleyball team took to the court for the first time in the 2009 season on Tuesday.
The Raiders finished 1-2 in their opening quad. They defeated Pleasanton 2-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-13), but lost to Neodesha 2-1 (22-25, 25-17, 22-25) and Galena 2-1 (25-20, 18-25, 14-25).
“We are young,” said Frontenac head coach Cassie Buche. “Our lack of experience showed but they were still competing.”
Frontenac was saddled with unforced errors in both of their losses as they were able to stay close in most games, but were hurt with net violations and attacking problems.
The reason could stem from the fact that the Raiders had two freshmen and two sophomores on the court coupled with a pair of seniors — Emily Barto and Alyssa Snow.
“We knew coming in that it would be baby steps,” Buche said.
Against Neodesha, the Raiders fell behind in the first game, 9-4 before bringing the game level, 11-11.
A block by Barto gave Frontenac their first lead, 12-11 but errors started to play a factor and a thunderous kill from Neodesha’s Anetta Jameson ended the game, 25-22 in favor of the Bluestreaks.
In the second game, the Raiders took command early and held off a late rally by Neodesha on the back of a trio of kills from Barto to win, 25-17.
Things were close in the third, and decisive, game but a net violation gave the Bluestreaks their first lead, 23-22.
Belinda Rohling ended the match with a kill that split a pair of Raider middle row players.
“It is a huge transition for our younger players to come from junior high to high school volleyball,” Buche said. “The speed is really different and there were times where we were just a half-step slower than what we needed to be.”
Against Galena, Barto came through with three consecutive kills to give them a 25-20 game one win, but, as in the match against Neodesha, unforced errors and missed serves reared their ugly head for the Raiders.
Frontenac fell behind, 16-9 in the second game and could not recover then fell behind again in the third game and could not come up with a run.
“I think we were a little timid on offense but we have so many new girls on the floor,” Buche said. “If they are not aggressive, they won’t know just how good they can be.”
The Raiders will travel to Baxter Springs on Tuesday to open up the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League schedule.
