  • State track is filled with surprises. For Pittsburg’s Lauren Ouderkirk, the surprise was as good as gold as she ended her senior year by winning the Class 4A girls 300m hurdles.
Ouderkirk was the county’s only gold-medal winner at state, but the victory was certainly a surprise. Although her qualifying time was the second-fastest at 45.20, she advanced to the finals with a time of 46.61. The surprise came in the finals, when Ouderkirk blasted past the competitors and her own qualifying time with a time of 44.80. The next closest competitor was more than a half a second behind Ouderkirk at 45.45.
But while she was the only gold medalist, that doesn’t mean she was the only medalist. In fact, she wasn’t even the only medalist on her team. Marcus Striplin outperformed his own qualifying time and cleared 6’4” in the boys high jump to take 4th place in Class 4A. Stripliln also took 8th in the triple jump with a leap of 43’1.75” and 8th in the long jump with 20’10”.
Sometimes, those surprises at state aren’t always good. The girls 4x400m relay team qualified well in the preliminary heats with a time of 4:10.15, but fell backwards in the finals, taking 7th with a time of 4:14.90.
Altogether, the PHS girls team tied for 20th with Fort Scott with 11 points overall. The Pittsburg boys tied for 31st with 4 points overall.
Also in 4A, Girard senior Randi Pierce tied for sixth with a high jump over the 5-foot mark. Pierce also took seventh in the pole vault with a height of 9’6”. Girard finished tied for 38th.
    Class 3A
Colgan senior Derek Beck put in a strong effort to take fifth in the boys 100m dash.
Beck actually won his heat in the preliminaries with a time of 11.23 to qualify for the finals. However, despite improving on his time to 11.08, Beck took fifth. Beck would also take 11th in the 400m dash with a time of 51.99.
But the top medalist for local schools in Class 3A was Colgan junior Jonathan Adamson in the long-distance race. Adamson took second in the 3200m run with a time of 10:14.84, just .07 seconds ahead of third place. The winner, Cory Donley of Sacred Heart in Salina, was in at 9:50.79.
Colgan also had a medalist in the long jump, junior Conner Dayton, who took 6th with a jump of 21’1”.
Casey Steimiller had a chance to earn some points for Colgan in the 300m hurdles, qualifying in preliminaries in fifth with a time of 40.39. However, in the finals he finished in 8th with a time of 42.16.
Moira Myers was the only other finalist for Colgan, taking 7th in the 800m run in 2:29.36. Colgan ended the day tied for 17th on the boys side and tied for 33rd on the girls side.
Page 2 of 3 - Southeast did have one person earning points, as Ryan Rakestraw took 7th in the high jump by clearing 6’.
    Class 2A
Northeast had a points-earner of its own in sophomore J.T. Richardson.
Richardson had qualified for state with a leap of 40 feet, but every one of his jumps at state was longer than that mark. His best was a hop, skip and a jump for 41 feet, 2.25 inches. That beat — by a quarter of an inch — a mark set by another jumper to give Richardson fifth place.
