Halloween is supposed to be fun, but the Pittsburg Police Department wants to make sure it is also safe.

That’s why they’re offering these seven safety tips for those planning to go trick-or-treating tonight:

• Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. If going in a group, 2-3 parents may be needed.

• Plan a safe route so parents can find older kids if separated. Set a return time.

• If you child is going out alone, make sure they are old enough and responsible enough. Also, send them with a cell phone for emergencies.

• Tell kids not to cut across alleys and fields if alone, and to stay in populated, well-lit areas.

• Instruct kids not to eat candy until they get home and parents inspect for any potentially problematic candy.

• Teach kids not to go into a stranger’s home or car and explain why that would be a bad idea and what to do if they are approached.

• Make sure you or your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape to make them more visible to cars.
