The hits were few and far between in the first game of a doubleheader for the Pittsburg State baseball team at Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday.

The runs were just as few and far between in the second game.

The Gorillas had just one hit in an 8-0 loss in game one and managed just two runs on 10 hits in the second game, an 8-2 loss, in game two as the Mavericks completed a four-game sweep of PSU over the weekend.

The pair of wins extended the Mavericks’ winning streak to eight games.

In the first game, the Mavericks (24-9, 14-4 MIAA) used a five-run first inning to start off. UNO registered a hit, led by Andrew Hansen who went 2-for-4.

Already leading 1-0 in the first, Drew Schwab doubled down the right field line, scoring Brett Koehn and Evan Porter to make it 3-0.  The Mavs would add single runs on a Pitt State (9-19, 6-8 MIAA) error and a sacrifice fly by Travis Jacobi.

UNO added three more in the third on a two-run triple by Jacobi and an RBI single from Jeremy Klein.

UNO starter Joe Holtmeyer struck out six in the complete-game performance.

In the second game, UNO was the beneficiary of seven Gorilla errors to finish off the four-game sweep.

PSU was able to cut the UNO advantage to 3-2 in the top of the third after getting single runs in the second and third innings.

In the second, Ben Ahrens started with a double to left field and was driven in three batters later when catcher Ryan Thayer singled to left.

Rhett Rigby had an RBI single to score Jason Murphy — who reached on a double down the right-field line in the previous at-bat — in the third inning.

UNO got four more runs in the fifth keyed by a three-run home run from Travis Jacobi.  He finished the game 2-for-2 with the three RBI.

The Gorillas will be back in action on April 3 for a four-game set at Fort Hays State.
