Thumbs up ... to the news that the town of Roseland, located near Weir and West Mineral, have finished a new community center/city hall/storm shelter for its residents. The new facility got immediate use after its completion on May 19 as the shelter was opened on May 22 when tornadoes struck southeast Kansas and devastated Joplin. While kudos are deserved for Roseland, our question is: If a town the size of Roseland can develop a storm shelter for its residents, why can’t Pittsburg follow suit?

Thumbs up ... to this weekend’s concert by country music star Jo Dee Messina. Messina, who was voted Top New Female Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in 1998, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Pittsburg’s Memorial Auditorium. The concert was meant to kick off the star’s “Million Doors” fundraising campaign, however it was decided that the proceeds will now go to the American Red Cross for Joplin relief.
