COFFEYVILLE — Pittsburg Post 64 won both of its games Friday during the first day of the Red Raven Classic, a showcase tournament put on by Coffeyville Community College at Walter Johnson Park.

Post 64 took both games in dramatic fashion, both in eight innings — defeating the Wichita Rangers 7-5 and the KC Regal Athletics 3-2.

With international rules in effect during extra innings, Post 64 catcher Bryan Wade started on second base. Nick Vacca drew a walk and V.J. Piccini moved over Wade and Vacca on a sacrifice bunt. Bryce Burdette drove home Wade with a sacrifice fly. Nate Grimaldi doubled home Vacca and Post 64 reliever Blake Vail once again closed the door on an opponent (Wichita Rangers) in the bottom half of the eighth inning.

Brett Macary and Vail each drove in a pair of runs for Post 64.

In the second game, Burdette started the bottom of the eighth at second base. Grimaldi walked and with one down, Cody Grilz produced a walk-off line-drive single to center to score Burdette. Grilz drove in two of the three Post 64 runs.

Walter Johnson Park is, of course, named after the baseball legend born on a farm near Humboldt on Nov. 6, 1887.

Johnson won 417 games during his 21-year career (1907-1927), all seasons played for the Washington Senators. He posted a 2.17 career ERA and struck out 3,509 batters over 5,914.1 innings. Johnson pitched 531 complete games in 666 starts and tossed 110 shutouts, which rank him No. 1 in MLB history. He won 36 games in 1913.

According to the Kansas Historical Society, Johnson returned home to Kansas throughout his long baseball career; he and his wife Hazel lived on a farm near Coffeyville until she died in 1930.

Post 64 (26-10) plays the Wichita Sluggers today on the second day of the Red Raven Classic.
