Nerves, move aside because the Riverton Rams’ softball team did not seem to have any of them Friday night.
Cheslyn Mitchell went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Haleigh Sills pitched a complete-game 2-hitter to lead the Rams to a 10-0, 5-inning run-rule win over Pratt in the first round of the Class 4A state softball tournament at the Bill Burke Complex in Salina.
And the nerves never seemed to play a factor for Riverton, who pounded out 16 hits and scored in every inning but one.
“You have to chalk it up to experience,” said Riverton head coach Brian Mitchell. “We’ve played in some pretty big games all year long and that really helps.”
Sills never wavered as she struck out seven Greenbacks and never allowed a runner past second base.
“I just wanted to keep the ball down and get my drop-ball to break,” Sills said. “I figured they would be a good-hitting team and I just wanted to mix it up.”
On offense, the Rams started big after Cheslyn Mitchell led off the game with a triple that caught the Greenback defense by surprise as they moved in close to protect against the bunt.
Mitchell’s shot soared over the head of left fielder Olivia Barber and rolled to the fence.
Carleigh Hall followed with an RBI bunt single to put Riverton up 1-0 early.
“I just had a lot of confidence and I knew that I could do it,” Cheslyn Mitchell said. “I wasn’t expecting it [the triple] but, I was hoping to get on base and score.”
Sills hit a seeing-eye single into the infield gap that plated Hall from third.
The Rams picked up two more runs after Whitney Shafer led off the third with a single and Dalaynee Ludwig scored her with a single to the left side.
Another run scored after Kotye Mallatt singled home Ambur Simmons with two outs.
Cheslyn Mitchell picked up her third hit of the game — an RBI single — that scored Mallatt for the third run of the inning.
A trio of consecutive hits from Kelsey Anderson, Ludwig and Simmons scored another run for the Rams and Mallatt grounded out to score Ludwig and put Riverton up 8-0 in the fourth.
Sills plated the winning run in the bottom of the fifth with a rope single to right that scored Hall from third.
Riverton advances to play Rose Hill at 10 a.m. today in the semifinals.
