Jim Johnson (athletic director), Tim Beck (football) and Kevin Muff (basketball) had some big shoes to fill after the retirement of two Pittsburg State coaching legends: Chuck Broyles, who served as both head football coach and athletic director, and Gene Iba, basketball coach.

Pitt State president Steve Scott hired Johnson in July; Johnson had been commissioner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association since 2007 before taking on athletic director responsibilities at PSU.

Beck, who had 16 years as offensive coordinator and 22 years on Broyles’ staff under his belt, coached the Gorillas to a 6-6 record in his first season as head football coach. Pitt State evened its record at .500 after winning the Dec. 4 Mineral Water Bowl against Concordia-St. Paul, 13-9.

Muff accepted the head men’s basketball coach position Apr. 5 and the Gorillas have a 6-3 record so far in the 2010-11 season. Muff had been an assistant at Pitt State from 1990-93.
