Members of the Pittsburg High School class of 1943 got together Saturday at the Elks Lodge to celebrate their 65th anniversary.
“It’s amazing how many of us are still around,” noted Dale Foote, classmate came from Squaw Valley, Calif.
Just how many were in the class is a matter of some controversy, Foote added.
“I saw it was in the upper 190s,” he said, “but Homer Cole says it’s more than that.”
That’s because Cole, main organizer for the event, counts all the young men who were drafted to serve in World War II.
“We had 244 in our class, but there were close to 30 of them who didn’t graduate because of the war,” said Cole, Pittsburg. “If you were 18, you were gone. I got my draft notice the day after I turned 18.”
Claire Maddox, Wichita, said he was drafted, but got a deferment so he could graduate from high school.
“I really wasn’t that concerned about graduating,” he said. “I didn’t know if I’d be coming back, so I enjoyed life. I went hunting about every morning.”
He made it back, but several of his classmates did not.
“We lost a lot of them killed in the war,” Cole said. “Some of them were killed immediately when they got over there.”
A total of 150 class members are now deceased, he said.
Class members attending were as follows: Keith and Doris Askins, Grand Junction, Colo.; Clara Tatham Beasley, Kelso, Wash.; Wanda Shelburn Kirby, Asbury, Mo.; Dale Foote, Squaw Valley, Calif.; Claire Maddox, Wichita; Gene Richards, Butler, Mo.; Mary Lou Kinsch Gooding, Maitland, Fla.; Shirley Ann Dowling Bowers, Fort Collins, Colo.; Maxine Burgey Wolfe, Muncie, Ind.; Raymond Scavezze, Joplin; Nancy Lee Horton Bowlus, Centerville, Ohio; Homer Cole, Pittsburg; Kenneth Coulter, Pittsburg; Jack Holman, Pittsburg; Bill Lowe, Pittsburg; Stella Mae Bertino Thompson, Frontenac: Marinella Clark Webber, Pittsburg; Colleen Michie Tolle, Pittsburg; Norma Jean Little Tims, Pittsburg; Audrey Hatch Scroggins, Pittsburg; Mary L. Beauchamp Deill, Pittsburg; Doris Fast Wilkin, Pittsburg; Jewell Plowman Morris, Pittsburg; Ozzie Shoup; and Mike Maddox.
“It’s really good to have as many here as we do,” said Stella Thompson. “It was fun putting this reunion together, but the one who did it all was Homer Cole. All I did was help write the letter.”
Cole noted that class members have donated generously for scholarships for PHS graduates. “We’ve had a pretty good class, and we’ve always been close,” he said. “I’ve got a letter ready for the 75th anniversary.”
