  • Donald George Ellis passed away Sunday April 3, 2011 at his home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer.
    Donald was born October 18, 1953 in Pittsburg, KS the son of George and Mabel (Roberts) Ellis. The family moved to Garland, KS where he attended grade school. He graduated from Arcadia High School in 1951. He enlisted in the US Navy from 1952-1956 serving on the USS Formoe 509, a Destroyer Escort for 42 months.
    On November 23, 1957 he married Carolyn Burnet at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS; she survives at the home. He enrolled at Kansas State Teachers College (Pittsburg State University) in 1958 earning his BSBA in 1962. After graduation he worked as a Sales Representative until his retirement in 1998. Places he worked included American Electric, AC Spark Plug, Keystone Automotive, Atkinson Industries and Monsour Inc.
    First and foremost Don was a family man. He was an avid sports fan, especially sports involving his children and grandchildren. He had a real love for animals, especially his beloved dog Maggie.
    Don was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church; St. Mary’s-Colgan Booster Club; Kickapoo High School Booster Club and USS Formoe DE 509 Association.
    Survivors include his wife; daughters Theresa Tener of Pittsburg, KS and Jonna Smith and husband Travis of Kansas City, MO; sons Dr. Scott Ellis of Springfield, MO and Thomas G. Ellis and wife Christine of Neosho, MO; grandchildren Mitch Tener, Mallorie Tener, Anthony Ellis and Sara-Cate Ellis and numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Barbara Scott and brother Charles Willener.
    Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday April 8, 2011 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS with Fr. Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS where Military Honors will be conducted. Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Thursday April 7, 2011 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS; family will receive friends immediately following the rosary. Friends may call the funeral home after 11 a.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the OLOL Memorial Fund and/or SEK Humane Society.
