  • The Pittsburg baseball team split with the Parsons Vikings during a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader Friday at JayCee Ballpark, winning the first game 4-0 and losing the second 7-3 in 12 innings.
“Threw a great first game and got some timely hitting,” Pittsburg head coach Mike Wilbert said. “(The second game) was a great high school baseball game, very cleanly played. We had one error through 12 innings of baseball. We had multiple chances to win. We hit into a couple double plays. We’re the home team and we didn’t get the job done for five innings.”
After their complete game performances Tuesday night against Iola, senior pitchers Joe Wimmer and Broc Bennett came back against Parsons with more solid pitching.
Wimmer allowed no runs on two hits over seven innings. He faced 24 batters, three over the minimum as Parsons reached on two hits and one walk. In addition, he pitched two innings of scoreless relief in the second game.
Bennett allowed two earned runs over nine innings in the second game and Wimmer and Bennett combined for 18 innings of quality pitching.
“Our pitching was phenomenal tonight and I couldn’t ask for more from Joe Wimmer and Broc Bennett,” Wilbert said. “We just couldn’t get that key hit in the second game.”
Pittsburg had multiple chances to win in extra innings but could not get that one big hit for a doubleheader sweep.
In the first game, Pittsburg scored one in the second, one in the fourth and two in the sixth.
In the second, Dylan Gromer scored after doubles by Gromer and Anthony McNeely. In the fourth, Brandon Baker reached on an error and moved up on a passed ball, scoring on a Gromer RBI single. In the sixth, Bennett drove home a run on a fielder’s choice and Todd Keller hit a RBI single.
Pittsburg scored one in the first, one in the third and one in the fifth of the second game, every scoring rally started by a Wimmer hit. Wimmer singled in the first and scored on a Nick Vacca single, Wimmer doubled in the third and scored on a Spencer Bernhardt single and Wimmer reached on a single in the fifth and scored on a Parsons error.
Parsons scored four runs in the seventh to earn the doubleheader split.
Pittsburg moves to 7-5 overall and 6-4 in the SEK. Road games against Carl Junction on Monday and Independence on Thursday await Pittsburg.
