Dear Editor
I want to congratulate Wayne Cichon, of St. Mary’s - Colgan on being named by the Topeka Capital - Journal and Joplin Globe as their boy’s basketball coach of the year. This year’s 23 - 3 record and a state championship were another example of the difference a coach can make. Plagued with early season injuries to several key players, Wayne was still able to put a team together that got better with each game. St. Mary’s - Colgan five - state championships, and four - second place finishes  in the past thirteen years, with a total record of 426 -161 in his 25 years at our school, is outstanding. However, I think there is more to the story. There are some intangibles, that are hard to measure, that need to be recognized. Instilling in his player‘s discipline, work ethic, and individual sacrifice for something bigger than themselves come to mind. Wayne teaches calculus and algebra and takes it just as serious as he does basketball. St. Mary’s - Colgan are blessed with coaches and other faculty members, like Wayne, that are willing to put their students and the school first.
