The Pittsburg High School softball team got dominating performances in the field and at the plate during two run-rule wins over Parsons on Thursday night at Wild Red Berry Field.
Megan Nance struck out six and walked one while just giving up one hit as the Dragons took the first game 10-0 in six innings and counterpart Danielle Lair pitched seven innings and struck out four while giving up just two hits in the Dragons’ 16-0 win in the second game.
In the first game, Megan Barrager had an RBI triple that scored Lauren Caudle in the sixth and came back to plant an RBI double scoring Jessica Wade for the 10th — and game-ending — run.
Kaitlin King was 3-for-3 in the game with 2 RBIs and three runs scored while Wade was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Abby Bernhardt ended the game with 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
In the second game, Pittsburg had a slow first inning but came up big in the second after Bernhardt singled and stole second. Shannon Wheeler laid down a bunt single that scored Bernhardt then Allison Percy was hit by a pitch. After Wheeler and Percy successfully commited a double steal of third and second, respectively, Beka Scoles slapped a double between second and third that scored both Wheeler and Percy giving the Dragons a 3-0 lead.
“That was nice because we did not score in the first inning,” said PHS head coach Mary Packard. “We just could not get anything going in the first inning.”
In the third, Pittsburg added to its tally when the Dragons took advantage of two Parsons’ passed balls to score. Scoles singled home Wade and Caudle hit a fly ball to center scoring both Wheeler and Scoles.
The Dragons had a bit of a jam in the top of the fourth when Parsons had the bases loaded with two outs but Lair was able to get the last batter to ground out to end the threat.
Pittsburg put the game away in the bottom half of the inning after Wade led off with a triple and Bernhardt singled to score Wade.
Wheeler bunted and made it all the way to third on an error by the Parsons’ infield, which also scored Bernhardt. Percy was hit by her second pitch of the night and Scoles drew a walk. King hit in Scoles.
After scoring five runs in the inning, Caudle scored the winning run to end the game.
