Five students will represent Frontenac High School at Girls and Boys State June 7-12, an opportunity that Counselor Paula Ketterman said will provide them a chance to learn leadership skills through a week-long role playing exercise in civics.

Five students will represent Frontenac High School at Girls and Boys State June 7-12, an opportunity that Counselor Paula Ketterman said will provide them a chance to learn leadership skills through a week-long role playing exercise in civics.

Sunflower Girls State representatives, who will attend an American Legion Auxiliary-sponsored leadership academy at the University of Kansas at Lawrence, are Emily Barto, Megan Herron, and Ashley Lock.

Emily is the daughter of Barbara and Doug Barto of Frontenac. She has participated in softball, basketball, volleyball, National Honor Society, Student Council, FCCLA, Rennaissance card holder, Spanish Club, Special Olympics volunteer, and FHS theatrical productions.

Megan is the daughter of Kenny and Jeanne Davidson of Frontenac. She has participated in volleyball, basketball, FCCLA, track, National Honor Society, Renaissance Committee, Spanish Club, Special Olympics volunteer, and FHS theatrical productions.

Ashley is the daughter of Karen Lock, John Lock, and Rhonda Loar. She has participated in FCCLA, Spanish Club, forensics, and several FHS theatrical productions.

Boys State of Kansas representatives, who will attend an American Legion-sponsored leadership academy at Kansas State University in Manhattan, are Kevin McCollam and Ryan Zafuta.

Kevin is the son of Loretta Audley, Frontenac, and Kyle McCollam, Topeka. He has participated in cross country, track, Spanish Club, Student Council, Scholar’s Bowl, has been class president and on the All-A Honor Roll, a Renaissance  Card holder, a volunteer for Festa Italiana and Special Olympics, and in several FHS theatrical productions.

Ryan is the son of Kendra and Karl Zafuta. His activities include National Honor Society, Student Council Vice President, Cross Country, Track, Pep Club, Spanish Club, Scholar’s Bowl, Forensics, Renaissance Card Holder, Catholic Youth Organization Vice President, and FHS theatrical productions.

In addition, Ethan Ketterman will be the delegate for the Cadet Law Enforcement Academy sponsored by Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas American Legion, and Kansas American Legion Auxiliary. He will participate in training in firearms instruction, personal defense, law enforcement techniques, courtroom trial procedures, the responsibilities of citizens, and more.

Ethan is the son of Paula and Todd Ketterman. He has participated in football, basketball, track, pep club, Raider Renaissance, Spanish club, and Catholic Youth Organization. He also serves as a volunteer junior firefighter, a volunteer for Festa Italiana, Red Cross, and Youth League.
