Things may get a little confusing for Colgan fans today. After quickly dispelling Johnson-Stanton County, 16-1 in four innings on Friday, the Panthers will meet St. Marys in today semifinal.
The problem is that though St. Marys is called the Bears, their colors also happen to be blue and white.
“We played them here a few years ago,” said Colgan head coach Bill Verga. “But it’s been a couple years. Different coaching staff and different girls.”
St. Marys (17-7) defeated Spearville (16-4) 12-4 in seven innings before an aggressive Colgan team scored a combined 12 runs in the first two innings of their win over Johnson-Stanton County.
The Trojans scored one in the first off an RBI double. However, Colgan came back with a vengeance. They sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring seven runs on six hits with each at bat rarely lasting more than one or two pitches.
“We were excited,” Verga said. “Things busted loose for us early. We just wanted to come out and make a statement. ”
The Trojans got just two hits in the first before Katie Hayes retired the next nine batters in order. The Panthers batted around again in the second scored five runs on four hits.
The Panthers will square off with the St. Marys Bears at 10 a.m. in Saturday morning’s semifinal. A win in that game would put them in the Class 2A championship game at 1 p.m. A loss in the semifinal would place in them in the third-place game at noon.
“We’ve got an aggressive offense and if the ball’s in their zone then they’re going to put a bat on it,” Verga said. “Hopefully that continues for us, but tonight we hit it to the right spots and it wasn’t right at players and hopefully we can continue to do that and have a good tournament.”
