It may have not been the outcome that the Frontenac Raider softball team wanted, but it was not for a lack of trying.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh to Halstead in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state softball tournament at Twin Oaks Complex in Manhattan, Meghan Winden came off the bench to score a run and Frontenac had a shot to tie.
Molly McFarland was on third and Breanna Rhuems hit a shot to the second baseman for Halstead.
The second baseball, in turn, picked up the ball and threw out McFarland at home to end the game, with Frontenac falling 3-2.
“I give credit to the girls for fighting to the end and they never gave up,” said Raider head coach Cassie Buche.
Halstead used a three-run first to take a lead that they did not relinquish.
“I don’t know if it was just jitters or what it was but, it was just a combination of things that happened in the first inning,” Buche said.
But, after the first, Frontenac starting pitcher Emily Barto settled down and notched 12 strikeouts over the next six innings.
“She really settled in and they had just two base runners after the first inning,” Buche said.
McFarland went 2-for-3 with a run scored, one RBI and a stolen base for the Raiders as Barto picked up Frontenac’s only other hit of the game.
“We played great defense and we came up there and surprised them,” Buche said. “If we have one more inning or take away the first, we could have beat them.”
