Contestants are being sought for the third annual statewide Spelling Bee for Senior Citizens, to be held at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at the Webster Conference Center, Salina.

Contestants are being sought for the third annual statewide Spelling Bee for Senior Citizens, to be held at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at the Webster Conference Center, Salina.
Grand prize will be a $1,500 scholarship to attend the National Senior Citizens Spelling Bee competition in June 2010 at Cheyenne, Wyo.
Partnering to sponsor the event are the Salina Senior Center, City of Salina Parks and Recreation 50 Plus Program, Humana Insurance, AARP of Kansas, RSVP of Salina, Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel, Kansas Area Agencies on Aging and Kansas State University of Salina.
The spelling bee is open to any Kansas resident who will be 50 or older by Oct. 1, 2009. There is a $5 entry fee, payable in advance. Checks should be made payable to the Salina Senior Center.
Entry forms may be obtained online at www.salhelp.org/aging/spellingbee, or by calling 1-785-827-9818. They may also be picked up at the Humana booth at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson and at the Flint Hills Area Agency Senior Fair Sept. 22 at the Salina Senior Center booth.
Entry forms should be returned by Sept. 28 to the Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth, Salina, Kan., 67401.
