The Pittsburg High School boy’s tennis team came away with a fifth-place finish and two sixth-place finishes at the recent Southeast Kansas League tennis championships on Tuesday.

The No. 2 doubles team of John Hamilton and Josh Vannurden came into the tournament as the No. 3 seed and won their first math over Brian Gorman and Gabe Quick 8-2, but fell in the winner’s bracket semifinals to Parsons’ Jason Alexander and Alexander 6-4, 6-4.
That moved them to the losers bracket where they lost to Labette County’s David Warren and Joe Garrett 8-7 (7-4).
From there, Hamilton and Vannurden defeated Chanute’s Caleb Flax and Matt Willis 8-3 to capture fifth-place overall in the tournament.
At No. 1 doubles, Ian Ivy and Daniel Giffin lost their first match to Labette County’s Bret Eckelberry and Jesse Muller 8-1 but battled back through the losers bracket defeating two opponents before falling to Chanute’s Jeremy Herald and Matt Stutt 8-2 in the fifth-place match.
Clay Southern, at No. 2 singles, fell to Cody Williamson of Parsons 8-3 in the first round of his bracket but battled back to defeat Nick Thomas of Columbus 8-7 (7-5). but fell to Chanute’s james Cheshier 8-5 in the fifth-place match to finish sixth overall.
The Dragons will now travel to Bonner Springs for their regional tournament next week.
