  • Crawford County Commissioners learned Tuesday that two railroad crossings in the county will be upgraded.
Jim Emerson said that he had just received contracts from the state regarding the crossings.
“Kansas City Southern will upgrade signals at a crossing north of 171 near Opolis,” he said. “There will be a lot better safety features there.”
The second crossing is located one mile north of Girard, and 1/2 mile off No. 7 Highway.
“Burlington Northern Railroad will have that upgrade,” Emerson said.
“This is one crossing that we’ve talked about,” said commissioner Bob Kmiec. “It’s of a low spot with an obstructed view and definitely needed work.”
Emerson said that the railroads would be doing the work.
“Our only obligation is to be sure that we get our signs up,” he said.
Commissioner Carl Wood called an executive session for attorney-client privilege, but no motions were made after the session ended.
It was announced that the Crawford County Courthouse will be closed Thursday and Friday because of the Thanksgiving holiday, and there will be no commission meeting on Friday. Also, on Nov. 30 the commissioners will view a fence near Chicopee.
