  • Crawford County Commissioners have accepted another agreement to upgrade a railroad crossing in the county.
Last week the county agreed to upgrades at two other local crossings. The third crossing is located around three miles north of Girard. Work will be done by the Burlington Northern Railroad, with the county responsible only for putting out signs.
This should make the crossing much safer, according to commissioner Bob Kmiec.
“This is another of those low visibility railroad crossings,” he said. “You’re right at it before you see it.”
County counselor Jim Emerson brought an invitation from the Joplin Regional Prosperity Initiative for a meeting to be held Friday in Carl Junction, Mo. He said that he had sat on the committee of JRPI, which is made up of representatives from Barton, Jasper and Newton Counties in Missouri, Ottawa County in Oklahoma and Labette, Cherokee and Crawford Counties in Kansas.
“I think for this meeting they’re aiming at commissioners and city council members,” Emerson said.
Commissioner Carl Wood volunteered to attend the meeting.
Commissioner Linda Grilz said that she has been working with Janis Goedeke, county health officer, on the Crawford County Health Department accreditation process.
“We’re thinking of some people we’d like to put on an advisory board that would help advise the department and keep public health in people’ eyes,” Grilz said. “I believe Janis may want to come to the commission with this.”
Next commission meeting will be at 10 a.m. Friday. Commissioners are also scheduled to do a fence viewing near Chicopee on that day.
