Pittsburg jumped out a big start and never looked back.
Despite a 45-minute rain delay.
Pittsburg rapped out nine runs on seven hits and got help from three errors by the Austin (Texas) Slam Sox and held on to win 9-4 in the final game of rebracket play in the Premier Junior World Series at JayCee Ballpark late Saturday night.
The win gives Pittsburg the pool win and they will play today in the consolation championship tournament which begins at 11:30 a.m. at JayCee Ballpark.
The start of the game was delayed by 45 minutes after strong rain mowed through the area but, after that, it was Pittsburg raining down hits in the first inning.
Joe Wachter led off the inning after reaching on a fielding error by Austin third baseman Dusty Allen.
He moved to second on a stolen base and scored on a throwing error by Slam Sox’s pitcher Ian Jones.
Kenny Wachter followed up after reaching on Austin’s third error of the inning when Austin second baseman Brian Konethy bobbled the grounder.
Willie Watt stepped up and smacked a single to right-center field then Jesse Watt bombed a two-run double to the left field wall, putting Pittsburg up 3-0.
Pittsburg was not done yet.
With one out, Tanner Smith hit a single past the shortstop then Michael Hayes slapped an RBI double to left field to score Jesse Watt.
Shane Drenick continued the hit parade with a two-run single to left and Zach White was hit by a pitch.
Joe Wachter came up for the second time in the inning and drew a walk when Kenny Wachter hit an RBI single.
Another run scored when Willie Watt hit a sharp grounder that put out Kenny Wachter advancing to second but, another run was able to score.
Jesse Watt picked up his third RBI of the inning with and single to right field.
With a 9-0 lead, Pittsburg starting pitcher Nick Whetzell held Austin to just two runs over the first three innings.
But, the nine-run first took the wind out of Pittsburg’s bats as they were only able to accumulate three more hits over the last six innings of the game.
The Slam Sox got their biggest run tally in the sixth inning when Cruz Luna led off with a single and Roman Gomaez followed with a walk.
Joshua Bartz hit an RBI single to shallow left field and Gomaez was able to score on a fly out from Stephen Kaminski.
