The Pittsburg State women’s basketball team has always been an ‘inside first’ type of team.
And why not when you have the MIAA’s fourth-leading scorer in junior post Nicole McCombs?
On Wednesday, it seemed that the Gorillas abandoned that game plan as they shot 8 of 15 from 3-point range in the first half and 12 of 26 for the game to knock off Truman State 87-62 at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Mo.
“We were outstanding tonight,” said PSU head coach Lane Lord. “We were concerned with this game because Truman has been playing well and, we knew that it would take an improved effort.”
The win marks the fourth in a row for the Gorillas (14-5, 9-3 MIAA), who sit in second-place in the MIAA with eight games remaining.
Pitt State dominated the Bulldogs (4-15, 1-11 MIAA) from start to finish as guard Caitlin Demarest had a career night as she knocked down five three point goals and led PSU with 19 points on the night.
“We just thought we would come here and see how we would play and it worked out,” Demarest said. “It was a good start for us.”
Demarest hit 10 of the Gorillas first 12 points of the game — including back-to-back three point goals as Pitt State battled back and forth with Truman for a 12-11 lead five minutes into the game.
Bailey Waugh got into the shooting action by hitting her own set of back-to-back three point goals as the Gorillas jumped out to a 21-11 lead with 13:03 left in the first half.
Waugh’s pair of 3s capped a 12-0 run that was helped with three turnovers by Truman State.
The Gorillas’ pressure forced eight early turnovers and DePrice Taylor was the beneficiary as she connected on a pair of lay-ups off of steals to increase the Pitt State lead to 31-15 with 8:51 left in the half.
“The pressure was great for us early,” Lord said. “We really took off at about the 10-minute mark of the first half. We were pretty dominant in the first half.”
The 11th turnover by the Bulldogs allowed Demarest to get her third three point goal to keep their lead up at 36-21 at the 4:54 mark.
“All week, I have been telling Coach [assistant Amanda] Davied that I needed to hit my 3s and they weren’t guarding our 3,” Demarest said. “I just happened to hit the shots.”
Demarest came back in the second half with her fourth three point goal to increase their lead to 22 at 61-39.
Taylor came alive in the second half and knocked down three jumpers for the Gorillas.
Demarest forced the Bulldogs to take a time out in at 15:31 with her fifth three point goal of the game as PSU went up 66-39.
The Gorillas went up by as many as 30 points midway through the second half.
“I think we need to come out and take everything serious in the MIAA,” Demarest said. “Truman is a good team and we wanted to come out and play hard.”
