The Pittsburg State University volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2009 season Friday night.


The Gorillas, the preseason No. 17 team in NCAA Division II, dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Southeastern Oklahoma State University by scores of 15-25, 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, but Pitt State regrouped to dispatch Harding University in four sets, 23-25, 25-10, 25-23, 25-12.


Senior OH Pamela Cartagena logged double-doubles in both matches. She tallied 12 kills and 10 digs against SOSU before accounting for 13 kills and 17 digs against HU.


Freshmen Molly Bergkamp and Corrine Stringer also logged double-digit kills in both matches.


Bergkamp totaled 25 kills, with 13 against SOSU. Stringer logged 11 kills against HU and 10 in the season opener.


Senior S Emily Vosseler had 47 assists against HU and 33 against SOSU.
